Status and contracts
Employed, worker or self-employed?
The label on a contract does not always match the working relationship. Control, substitution and who carries the risk all matter. Getting this wrong affects holiday pay, National Living Wage, tax and insurance.
What to watch for
- You invoice as self-employed but cannot refuse work or send a substitute
- One operator sets your hours, routes, uniform and scanner
- The van is supplied and you are treated like staff
Practical next steps
- Keep the contract, messages and how a normal week actually works
- Use the contract sense-check on this site, then read GOV.UK employment status
- Contact ACAS for free, confidential information before you resign or sign again
